Why generate placeholder avatars?

User lists, comment threads, and team pages all look noticeably different once every row has a face instead of an empty circle. A quick, deterministic avatar lets you preview that density and spacing immediately, and because it's served live from a URL it drops straight into any <img> tag.

Choosing a style

  • Initials — a name-based fallback avatar, the same pattern used by most real apps.
  • Geometric shapes — an identicon-style pattern for when you want visual variety without relying on a name.

Using the API directly

Every avatar is served by a plain GET endpoint, so you can build the URL yourself without opening this page — handy for seeding fixtures, README screenshots, or anywhere you just need an image URL.

GET https://dummycontent.site/api/avatar?seed=Jane+Doe&size=96&shape=rounded&style=initials

Query parameters

  • seed — text used to deterministically generate the avatar. Default "Dummy Content", max 60 characters.
  • size — width and height in pixels. 16–512, default 128.
  • shape — circle, rounded, or square. Default circle.
  • style — initials or shapes. Default initials.
  • bg / fg — optional 3- or 6-digit hex color (no #) to override the automatic palette.

Responses are image/svg+xml, cached for a year since the output is fully deterministic per URL, and rate-limited to 300 requests per minute per IP.

Frequently asked questions

Where do the avatars actually come from?

Each avatar is an SVG rendered on the fly by our own /api/avatar endpoint from the seed and options in the URL — there's no external avatar service and nothing is pre-stored.

Will the same name always produce the same avatar?

Yes — the seed text is hashed deterministically, so a given seed, shape, and style always renders identically. Change the seed (or hit Random name) to get a different look.

What's the difference between the two styles?

Initials shows the seed's initials on a solid color background, like a classic profile-picture fallback. Geometric shapes renders a symmetric, identicon-style pattern instead — useful when you don't have a name to work from.

Can I use this in a live production site?

It's built for testing, mockups, and demos rather than production traffic — responses are cacheable, but there's no uptime SLA, so swap in real avatars before shipping.
