Why generate placeholder images?

Real photography and final graphics are rarely ready when you're wiring up a layout. A quick, precisely-sized placeholder lets you confirm aspect ratios, responsive breakpoints, and image-grid spacing without waiting on assets — and because every image is served live from a URL, it works anywhere you'd use a normal <img> tag.

Choosing a style

  • Solid / gradient — clean fills for hero sections and cards.
  • Dot / grid pattern — subtle texture that reads as a graphic rather than empty space.
  • Photo icon — a classic image-placeholder glyph for galleries and avatars.

Using the API directly

Every placeholder image is served by a plain GET endpoint, so you can build the URL yourself without opening this page — handy for seeding fixtures, design mocks, or anywhere you just need an image URL.

GET https://dummycontent.site/api/image?w=640&h=360&style=gradient&bg=2563eb&fg=7c3aed&text=Hero

Query parameters

  • w / h — width and height in pixels. 16–4,000, default 600×400.
  • style — solid, gradient, dots, grid, or photo. Default solid.
  • bg / fg — optional 3- or 6-digit hex color (no #) for the background fill, or the two gradient stops when style=gradient.
  • text — optional label text, up to 80 characters. Defaults to the image's dimensions.
  • textColor — optional 3- or 6-digit hex color (no #) for the label text, independent of fg. Defaults to fg when omitted.

Responses are image/svg+xml, cached for a year since the output is fully deterministic per URL, and rate-limited to 300 requests per minute per IP.

Frequently asked questions

Where do the images actually come from?

Each image is an SVG rendered on the fly by our own /api/image endpoint from the parameters in the URL — there's no external image service and nothing is pre-stored.

Can I use the image URL in a live production site?

It's built for testing, mockups, and demos rather than production traffic — responses are cacheable, but there's no uptime SLA, so swap in real assets before shipping.

What styles can I generate?

Solid color, gradient, dot pattern, grid pattern, or a photo-icon placeholder, each with customizable background and foreground colors.

What size range is supported?

Any width or height between 16px and 2,400px, plus common aspect-ratio presets (1:1, 4:3, 16:9, and more) that keep height in sync as you resize.

Can I add custom label text to the image?

Yes — type any text to render on the image, or leave it blank and the generator labels it with the image's own dimensions.
